Heartfelt, genuine and all-around awesome, Hannah and Scott’s backyard wedding was inspired by their first date, which included an impromptu, fully dressed dip in the river. Though there was no river-swimming for Hannah in her Astrid & Mercedes Aurora gown, their celebration featured plenty of romance and airy summer vibes – just like that special, magical night when she and Scott met.
Hannah and her bridesmaids had a hand in creating every little piece of her and Scott’s day, and the care just radiates in every picture. As does the serious love these two have for each other. The energy between these two? All. The. Feels.
How did Scott propose?
Scott: “My plan was to ask Hannah to marry me on Christmas Eve. But, I had a window a week before when Hannah was at work to ask her parents for permission to marry her. Once they said ‘yes’, I was too excited and couldn’t wait! The next day we went to Saxapahaw – the site of our first date – and I had written two notes in a journal we keep together. The second note was titled: The Proposal. I had the ring in my right pocket and the notebook in my other hand. We walked along the river, but it was pouring rain and we got drenched! So, we went underneath the awning at the Hall River Ball room and I gave her the journal to read. After reading the second note, she said “Yes!””
How did you choose your gown?
Hannah: “The first day I ever went dress shopping, I went to Traditions by Anna in Raleigh, NC. They were having an Astrid & Mercedes trunk show and I really fell in love with the romantic elegance of the gowns. As soon as I tried on my dress, my mom and brother (who came along for the ride) gasped and said that this had to be the dress. It was romantic and sweet, but also sexy. It couldn’t have been more perfect! The saleslady asked if I thought that Scott would be surprised when he saw my dress. I said no, because I really felt that this was “me” in a dress! Turns out that is exactly what Scott said on our wedding day! In his words, “It was phenomenal.””
What’s your funniest wedding day memory?
“Scott and I had a blast with our bridal party on the dance floor. I remember looking from Scott to my bridesmaids yelling, “This is SO FUN!” We also had five little ring bearers who stole the show. One in particular couldn’t stop dancing with me – Scott made sure to tell me that he was even more in love with me than that ring bearer (ha!).”
What’s your most memorable wedding day moment?
“Walking down the aisle to Scott was the most amazing feeling that I have ever experienced. My younger brother and I recorded a song for Scott (as a total surprise!) for this special moment. Our tear-filled eyes were locked the entire time and I couldn’t believe that I had the honor of marrying such an amazing man!”
Five words that best describe your significant other?
Scott is: Kind. Sweet. Strong. Hilarious. Mine.
Hannah is: My sweetheart. Teammate. Fun. Caring. Trustworthy.
Tell us a little about your day! Did you have a theme or style in mind?
“We met at a barbeque at the beginning of summer and our first date ended up with us going for an unexpected swim in the Haw River in our street clothes! So, we’ve tried to match that summery love vibe with our wedding. We, of course, want it to have a good bit of formality and sacredness in addition to the whimsy of a summer evening.
As for the summery vibe: the girls wore light blue dresses and carried bouquets of wildflowers from a local farm, there were five little ones as ring bearers, the wedding was in a lovely wooded backyard (Hannah’s parents’ home — which is a very special place for us!), and we had local BBQ, beer, and ice cream.
For the formality and sacredness — the ceremony was backdropped against the woods, featured scripture readings, and twinkle lights added a romantic air to the evening. Since we are new North Carolinians, the wedding was a “destination wedding” for all of our family and most of our guests. We wanted the reception to be fun and a true thank you for everyone who has travelled to celebrate our love!”
Do you have any advice for future brides/grooms?
“Our wedding day was a truly wonderful day – altogether sacred, loving, joyful, and a little bit crazy. Although we put tons of care into planning the day (every single thing was done by hand by us and my bridesmaids), we really realized the next day that our wedding day was just a moment in our life – a very special moment. But, the marriage that continues after the wedding day is what it’s all about. Our advice to future brides/grooms would be to make sure that your day is how you’ve always envisioned it, but more than anything plan for a strong and everlasting marriage!
Also…live it up on your wedding day! Don’t get bogged down by what you think others expect of you. If you want to dance to every song with your wedding party instead of mingling – do it, we did & it was the best!”
Where did you go on your honeymoon?
“We went to Rosemary Beach, Florida. It was a perfect spot to honeymoon – our days consisted of swimming in the crystal blue waters, exploring the nearby beach towns on our bikes, and many happy hours.”
