Born and raised in New England, Hanna was drawn to the south for its culture and warmth. If you believe in fate (guilty!), then something more than an affinity for southern charm led her to attend the University of Alabama. You see, that’s where she met her new hubby, Patterson, who‘s a Dallas native.
In celebration of Patterson’s roots and Hanna’s love for her new home, these two planned a classic southern black-tie wedding. It all began with a seaside proposal (captured ninja-style by photographer Haylee Huffman) at Santa Rosa Beach that’ll give you all the ‘I do’ feels.
How did your sweetie propose?
“Patterson and I met in college down at the University of Alabama. I graduated a year earlier than he did, but for his senior year spring break, I joined him down in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, at his family’s place right on the beach. We regularly took weekend trips down there and had previously spent spring breaks down there, so it was kind of “our place.” His spring break happened to coincide with both of our birthdays (his March 22 and mine the 25th), so we had planned a nicer dinner at our favorite restaurant down there one night.
Since we were going out to dinner to celebrate what I thought were our birthdays, we dressed up in more than just beach attire. It was a beautiful evening and he had suggested we go walk on the beach and take some photos, which we tried every year to do and never had luck due to weather. Looking back on it, it seems so obvious, but like I said, this was all very normal for us so it wasn’t out of the ordinary! So anyway, we were walking on the beach and we stopped and looked at the water and when I turned to look at him, he was down on one knee. I, of course, broke down in tears and immediately said yes. And what was the neatest part was he had a photographer hiding and she captured the whole thing! I have attached my favorite photo of it so you could see!”
How did you choose your gown?
“I went in with almost no idea of what kind of dress I wanted. I knew I didn’t want a big ball gown, but other than that, I was very open to ideas. I love lace so I knew I wanted that, and love classic looks. When I tried on my gown, I instantly knew that was it! I could have gotten married in it that day and would have felt perfect- and when the day came I felt even more perfect since my hair and makeup was done!”
Tell us a little about your day! Did you have a theme or style in mind?
“Like I mentioned, my husband and I met at Alabama. He is from Dallas, and we currently live in South Carolina, so our whole relationship has been very “southern.” While I grew up in Massachusetts, I have always loved the southern culture and the south in general. We didn’t necessarily have a theme, but I always referred to it as Southern Black Tie. P’s family is very southern and formal, and I absolutely adore that and wanted to go with that idea. Since he has such a large family and deep seeded roots in Dallas, we chose to have it down there. Being in the south, we incorporated pineapples (for hospitality) into our details, such as the programs, escort cards, and menus. Our ceremony was at Patterson’s family’s church, Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church and our reception was at Brook Hollow Golf Club. The reason I fell in love with Brook Hollow was because their ballroom reminded me of a southern mansion interior, which I adore.“
Funniest memory from your wedding day?
“The funniest memory of our wedding day was definitely when P and I tried to cut our bride’s cake. We had filler layers, and we were warned about them, but when we went to cut, we accidentally went way too deep into the layer below and got the knife caught. And after that, when we went to sip our champagne, somehow his arm hit mine, and I ended up spilling the champagne all over my neck and chest!”
Five words that best describe Patterson:
“The five words I would use to describe Patterson are: loving, silly, intelligent, a true southern gentleman (I know that’s four but I couldn’t figure out how else to say it!), and handsome (of course).”
Any advice for couples planning their wedding?
“My advice for future brides and grooms is to have fun! I was very involved with planning my wedding and I am very detail oriented, but you have to try and be as relaxed as possible when it comes to wedding planning! At the end of the day it’s not the flowers or the menu font or the napkin color that matters or that people will remember. Getting too caught up in the details, especially making sure everything is perfect on the day of, will just take away from what is important – that you’re getting married and are now married! Just have fun. No matter what happens it will be the most magical day of your life!”
Where did you go on your honeymoon?
“We honeymooned in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, which was amazing and I highly recommend.”
