Family Farm Wedding | Hollie + Drew

It’s true we love beautiful weddings, but it’s equally true that all weddings are beautiful, because it’s about two people coming together and agreeing to share joys, sorrows and everything in between for ever and ever. That’s sometimes hard to remember when planning a wedding (or even choosing a dress).

If you find yourself a bit off-course in the wedding planning process, our sweet bride Hollie (whose family farm wedding you’re about to have an OMG moment over) has such great advice: “Enjoy the entire journey start to finish. It isn’t about the details of the day – it is about the promises that are made that day.”

Hollie and Drew exchanged vows and danced ‘til the cows came home (sorry – we couldn’t resist!) at Hollie’s parents’ farm in Indiana. A cornfield ceremony, tractors, whiskey barrels, fireworks…it is all there, as is the love these two clearly have for one another.

Read their sweet proposal story, how Hollie found her Elaine wedding dress (so perfect for her!), and more about their day below!

How did your sweetie propose?

“We were at his grandfather’s farm, a place we love to frequent on our days off! There is lots of land to enjoy and it is just such a special place. One thing especially unique about this place is the old 1939 John Deere tractor that has been sitting in one spot so long that it has a tree growing up through it, it is SO cool. Drew (my handsome husband) wants to refurbish this tractor someday in the near future, so I didn’t think anything of it when he said he wanted to get a few pictures of it to start the process. He asked me to get in the picture so up I hopped onto this rusty seat and goofing off oblivious to the fact that he had staged this to get me on the tractor, because where else would you ask a country girl to marry you?!! He asked me and took out the most beautiful ring that he designed! He also arranged for our entire family to meet us for a celebration at the nearby park. It was the perfect start to our wedding festivities. I couldn’t have dreamt a better proposal from the most perfect man.“

How did you choose your gown?

“Oh, choosing the gown…how awesome was this day! It was only a week after the proposal! I was so excited and decided to call and make an appointment to browse for ideas on dresses with a local boutique, M.H. Pomander’s. I walked in and was greeted with champagne by the owners of the store, I was lucky enough to have my mother, mother-in-law, and sisters-in-law along with me.

The ladies began asking my vision of the perfect dress so they could start pulling aside dresses for me to try on. I was convinced that all lace was going to be “The Look” so that is what they had for me! Lots of beautiful lace gowns, one by one I came out of the dressing room, I was receiving a positive reaction with each dress and man oh man was I loving this! It is every girl’s dream to choose the perfect dress! When I reached the end, they asked if I wanted to try something a little different, my sister-in-law/matron of honor Stephany has an awesome eye and thought I might like this particular dress and the owners of the boutique agreed and brought it in. I, of course, agreed to try it on although very different in style.

It was all satin, simple, fitted in the hips, dropped sleeves, and a classic draping bow in the back…this was it. I knew as soon as I put it on, although I didn’t tell my little entourage yet. I walked out and received a gasp this time, they knew as well and I knew Drew would! I already couldn’t wait for him to see it. I walked up and down the boutique “aisle” and as I returned to them I told them this was the dress that I would become Hollie Hanson in.“

Tell us about your day! Did you have a theme or style in mind?

“We knew we wanted an outdoor wedding and at my parents’ farm was always my dream. I wanted elegant while incorporating our country roots, so we were married between two large, old maple trees with the cornfield as our backdrop. Our aisle was flanked by authentic whiskey barrels (that Drew refinished) with huge draping flower arrangements on top. A chandelier, candle light, blush pink garden roses and love filled the white tent nearby our ceremony site where our family and friends danced the night away. We even had a firework show halfway through the reception! Blessed doesn’t even begin to cover it…it was simply perfection.“

Five words that best describe your sweetie:

“There are so many words that describe Drew Hanson! haha. He is seriously the most wonderful man that I have ever met and I am so lucky to be his wife. I wandered off topic…Ok I could only narrow it down to 6.
Hardworking, Compassionate, Manly, Handsome, Witty, and Charismatic. :)

He is sitting next to me on the couch and I asked him 5 words to describe me. His answer as follows, Hollie is classically beautiful, nurturing, funny, old soul, can light up any room.”

Any advice for future brides/grooms?

“Enjoy the entire journey start to finish. It isn’t about the details of the day, it is about the promises that are made that day. We had a sweetheart table that was slightly elevated so we could see the entire room and at one point during dinner we stopped and held hands and watched everyone laughing and talking and we soaked it in!! We talked for several minutes about how beautiful that sight was and that is something we will never forget. So sit back and relax and take those mental pictures and realize how blessed you are to be in that moment with your best friend.”

Where did you go on your honeymoon?

Well…my husband is full of surprises! He told me we were going to Florida but wouldn’t tell me exactly where because he wanted a fun surprise. We got to the airport and he took care of everything, the luggage check in, the boarding passes, etc. He made sure nobody slipped and told me our destination. He had me put in my earphones and put my hands over my eyes once we got to our gate, I played along thinking he was taking this Florida surprise seriously! Once we got on the plane we were seated in first class and given mimosas, the flight attendant then congratulated the new Mrs. Hanson on her first trip to the Cayman Islands! What a surprise! We had an amazing time!”

Usually we list our bride’s vendors (as we did at the bottom of this post) but Hollie’s recommendations were so heartfelt we had to share!

“I would like to thank the talented Jessica Mattingly who was my day of wedding coordinator. Jess met with my mom and I several times in the months leading up to the wedding to make sure every detail was covered. She not only was organized, professional, and hardworking but she also became my friend. Our day would not have been the same without her.

Photographer: Stefanie and Brock Childs (SB Childs) – This talented married photography duo are the cat’s pajamas!! SO incredibly talented and easy to work with. They are simply delightful and take breathtaking photos that we will cherish forever.

Bridal boutique: M.H. Pomander’s – These lovely ladies know how to make a gal feel like a princess and choose the perfect gown. They are classy and have a beautiful boutique! I feel lucky to have found my dress in their store.

Wedding cake: Heavenly Sweets – Our cake was heavenly indeed! Tanya made our wedding cake vision a reality. We received so many compliments on the cake and look forward to our first anniversary when she sends us a little cake to celebrate.

Florals: Accent Floral Design – Our flowers were breathtaking. Exactly what I had pictured for our elegant, farm wedding! Linda always communicated well throughout the planning and was a delight to work with.

Rentals: A Classic Rentals – We got our tent, linens, and china from here and I can not say enough about how easy that they made the process. Mike knows his stuff and is so organized and helpful!

Jewelry: Our extremely talented friend,  jewelry designer Jeff West (J West Jewelry Design) made our wedding bands.

Music: DJ Brian Carrigan (PBJ Pro DJ) was amazing and kept everyone dancing!

We were so blessed to have worked with such fantastic vendors! They made the planning fun and something that I will never forget! We said it frequently that we were so lucky to be surrounded by such good people on the best day of our lives!”
