Gorgeous Michigan Estate Wedding | Lydia + Matt

Lydia and Matt’s gorgeous Michigan estate wedding will give you serious #stylegoals. Between the drop-dead gorgeous setting, perfect golden summer light, and this chic bride and groom, our jaws collectively dropped.

Channeling her inner Grace Kelly, our radiant bride paired her Astrid & Mercedes Divine gown with a cathedral-length veil and pretty much the most romantic updo ever. Those stunning chandelier earrings could be straight from the crown jewels of Monaco. Meanwhile, Matt rocked his navy suit and brown shoes like the prince he so clearly is (you’ll know what we mean when you read their proposal story and funniest wedding moment below!).

How did your sweetie propose?

“It was the end of January, and Matt and I were in Windsor, Canada for a mini get-away trip that he had planned. After exploring the city throughout the day, we headed out for a fancy dinner before going to a concert later that night. The restaurant was a candlelit, intimate setting where we toasted to the weekend with some wonderful wine and enjoyed a delicious meal. We ended up losing track of time, and had to quickly leave the restaurant so that we wouldn’t be too late for the concert. But on our way there, Matt insisted that we stop the car and have a picture taken of us in front of the Detroit sky line. A little bit annoyed because I hate being late and it was FREEZING outside, I tried to make this happen as fast as possible. We parked, got out, and started walking…and walking…and kept walking. I remember thinking to myself, “Why can’t we just stop and take the picture here? Or here?” (Little did I know, he was trying to find the perfect spot, and someone to take a picture of him proposing, but there was no one around). After a minute or two, Matt stopped walking and put his arms around me. Within seconds I was staring down at my best friend on one knee…asking me to spend forever with him…with the river right behind us…in front of a beautifully lit up sky line. It was by far the BEST moment of my life! We ran off to the concert and celebrated listening to some amazing music. I will never forget how excited I felt that night when I looked up at Matt – my new fiancé. “

How did you choose your gown?

“It was the very end of my first day trying on wedding dresses. I had probably already tried on at least 15 dresses that day, and I was exhausted and still had not chosen “the one.” My consultant at The Gown Shop, Audrey, held up a dress on its hanger and asked me to just try on one more dress before heading home. Even though the style wasn’t what I wanted, I figured I had nothing to lose and would just give the dress a chance. Once it was on my body and I looked up at myself in the mirror, everything just clicked. Suddenly it felt so real that I was a bride and I was going to be marrying the man of my dreams. Honestly, I felt like a million bucks. With teary eyes and a huge smile, I excitedly said YES to the dress! For all future brides out there: Go into your dress appointments open minded! Sometimes what you think won’t look good on you ends up being the perfect look.”

Tell us a little about your day! Did you have a theme or style in mind?

“I would say our theme was a mix between elegant/romantic. Our reception was held at Addison Oaks, an incredibly beautiful English Tudor-style manor surrounded by acres upon acres of lush woodlands and lakes. Its gardens, streams, and charming nooks are what gives this picturesque property so much character. Inside, the ballroom is very formal with wooden paneling and natural sunlight streaming in from huge surrounding windows. Combining this style with our light blush and gold décor created such a romantic feel for our wedding celebration! Guests were also able to socialize out on the wrap around porch to enjoy beautiful scenery and weather.”

What’s your funniest wedding day memory?

“Less than a week before our wedding, my husband injured his knee playing soccer and ended up having to wear a brace. This was especially unfortunate because he and his mom had planned to do a surprise mashup for their mother/son dance. Because he’s a trooper, they still decided to go ahead and do it, but with only about a half an hour of practice time prior. It ended up being the funniest dance, especially because no one was expecting it. Watching my crippled husband hop around attempting N*Sync moves and then my mother-in-law flailing her arms around to “Chainsaw” by Family Force 5 was definitely a major highlight of the entire day.”

Five words that best describe your sweetie:

“Patient, Generous, Compassionate, Intelligent, Driven”

Do you have any advice for future brides/grooms?

“At some point during your reception, steal your new husband/wife away to go have a private few minutes together. Let yourselves soak everything in and appreciate how amazing it is that so many of your loved ones are all together in one place.”

Where did you go on your honeymoon?

“We honeymooned on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia! So breathtakingly beautiful. I definitely recommend it!”
