A surprise wedding. How awesome is that?? Laura and Daniel wanted an intimate wedding and the idea of surprising everyone was so much fun that they went with it…and everything was perfect.
The day was beautiful, their guests were overjoyed with such a wonderful, happy surprise, and the evening was filled with love, joy, and laughter.
Laura found her gown in our Toronto boutique, and after she picked up her Astrid & Mercedes Valentine gown, we couldn’t wait to see pictures. Imagine going to an engagement party only discover it was a wedding? So many emotions!! The captures are just as fantastic as you’d imagine (especially those of everyone finding out they were at a wedding), and Laura’s retelling of her day below is, too!
How did you choose your gown?
“I chose my gown on my own shortly after our engagement. With only four months from our engagement until our wedding day, I knew I’d have to act fast, which meant finding a dress relatively quickly. My first appointment was at Lea-Ann Belter, and it just so happened that the dress I chose was the first one I tried on! I tried about 7-8 other dresses, went to a second dress shop later that afternoon to try on more, thought about everything for a few days, and returned the following week to re-try the dress and place my order. I really enjoyed the simplicity of choosing my own gown because it was relaxing and easy to know what felt right.”
Tell us about your day! Did you have a theme or style in mind?
“We had a SURPRISE wedding, so no one knew we were getting married until 30 minutes before the ceremony! We planned the evening as an “engagement dinner” at a vineyard in Niagara, so when everyone arrived for a pre-dinner wine tasting, they learned that we were in fact getting married! We both wanted a small and intimate wedding shortly after our engagement, and loved the idea of and surprising everyone, so it was perfect.”
What’s your funniest wedding day memory?
“My funniest memory was my dad’s response to the surprise. He came to see me a few minutes before walking me down the aisle and his first words were: “You mean we don’t have to talk about wedding stuff endlessly all year? This is so perfect.””
What was your favorite wedding day moment?
“My favourite and most memorable moment was walking down the aisle and seeing the excitement and joy on everyone’s faces as they looked back at me. I imagined they would be excited and enjoy the surprise, but to see their genuine happiness in that moment was truly magical. Another favourite moment was locking eyes with my partner Daniel at the altar—it was really special to be standing there together making that commitment.”
Describe your wedding day in 5 words or less:
“Magical, romantic, genuine, carefree.”
What was your something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue?
Something old: An earring from my great-grandmother pinned to the ribbon on my bouquet
Something new: My wedding dress and shoes
Something borrowed: A necklace with a pearl pendant from my mom (she happened to lend it to me months beforehand to wear to my brother’s wedding, so I sneakily held onto it a little longer—she was very excited to see me wearing it on my wedding day!)
Something blue: I sewed a small blue bag to hold our rings
Where did you go on your honeymoon?
“We went to Tuscany for our honeymoon, and it was beautiful. We stayed in the countryside just outside of a medieval town called San Quirico d’Orcia and spent most days exploring surrounding towns, and enjoying the incredible food and wine.”
