Hannah and Joe go way back…as in all the way to high school! These two met while working at Harris Teeter in Asheville, NC. Fast-forward several years to a sunny day of skiing in Colorado, when Joseph zoomed down the mountain on a snowboard, slid to a stop, and proposed to Hannah on the spot (see a picture of it here or, even better, the goose-bump-inducing GoPro video of it here).
Kind of like bridal shop girls who get to finally shop for their own gowns, Hannah was so excited to put together her celebration. You see, Hannah is an Atlanta-based wedding planner, and when you’re always helping others, it’s so special to be able to do the same for yourself!
These two knew they wanted to exchange vows in their hometown and, in a nod to their engagement, did so on beautiful Bearwallow Mountain at The Lodge in Grand Highlands. Get details about that snowy proposal, how Hannah chose her gown, and about their day from our sweet bride below:
How did Joe propose?
“We were on vacation with my family in Telluride, Colorado. Joseph rode down the mountain on his snowboard where myself, my mom and dad were meeting him and my brother for lunch at the base. As he stopped, I was laughing because he sprayed me a bit with snow when I looked down to see him still in his bindings on both knees with the most beautiful ring extended toward me. My reaction was sheer shock and mumblings of “What the heck, Joseph?” “Is this real?” “Oh my god!”. He managed to ask through my shocked dialogue and well…I said YES!”
How did you choose your gown?
“I purchased my gown from Fabulous Frocks in Atlanta. I went into shopping not knowing exactly what I wanted so I tried on multiple silhouettes and from there narrowed it down to a fit and flare style. This Lea Ann Belter gown was hanging in the window of the store and actually was the last I tried on. Once I put it on, I knew it was the dress I had to be married in! I canceled my other appointments for the day and could not have been happier to find such a beautiful gown! I later had the crystal sash sewn on as I wore that same belt at my older sister’s wedding two years prior as her Maid of Honor!“
Tell us about your day! Did you have a theme or style in mind?
“Our wedding at The Lodge in Grand Highlands on Bearwallow Mountain was truly perfect. The weather, after looking ominous for days, could not have been more beautiful and what a treat for our out-of-town guests to experience the breathtaking mountains of North Carolina. Our wedding was truly a family affair and labor of love. We had so many personal touches, from Joseph hand-lettering our welcome and bar signs to my dad hand-building our arbor, sangria bar and so many other decor items we used that day.”
What’s your funniest wedding day memory?
“Hah! Well, my mom was lucky enough to find a beautiful dress that she didn’t need to have altered one bit, so naturally she hung it in her closet and didn’t bring it back out until our wedding day. Well, on that day as we were all getting ready, my mom looks down to see a security tag still attached to the bottom of her dress! In the moment, there was only a minor freak out as we researched how to remove a security tag. We thankfully were able to find the humor in the situation and my amazing MacGyver of a father did somehow get it off.“
Five words that best describe your sweetie:
“Joseph is kind-hearted, generous, has a great sense of humor, smart and handsome as can be!”
Any advice for future brides/grooms?
“Don’t forget to take a moment to yourselves as newlyweds before the reception. The night is a beautiful whirlwind. We were so happy to have time built into the evening for us to just take it all in. “
Where did you go on your honeymoon?
“We stayed at the Excellence Resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.”
