Julie and Tory’s Maui wedding was everything you’d imagine nuptials in Hawaii would be. Epically beautiful, it featured a conch shell blower, a ceremony with waves crashing just steps from where vows were exchanged, golden light, lush flowers, and a stunning bride wearing a gown whose liquid movement mirrored that of the sea. In a (coco)nut shell, it was paradise.
We suspect this is due to the fact that Julie followed her own wedding planning advice:
“Have the type of wedding that feels shamelessly good to both of you. Don’t let your family & friends influence your decision. If you want a big party, have a big party!! If you want to elope – elope! Be true to yourselves. It’s your day, enjoy it. You’ll be so glad you did.”
From Julie:
How did your sweetie propose?
“It was Thanksgiving. It was just the two of us at home—we weren’t able to travel to be with family due to our work schedules. He made an amazing Thanksgiving meal and set the table beautifully. We sat down to eat and he got down on one knee and surprised me with the beautiful ring that I loved but told him “please don’t get” because it was too expensive!”

How did you choose your gown?
“It was an easy decision. I tried on the Maya sample and fell in love with the beautiful material and the way it fit my body. Customizing it by combining the bustline of the Josephine with the Maya made it more elegant and very special.”
Tell us about your day! Did you have a theme or style in mind?
“Laid back, fun, and easy. We didn’t have any particular theme—although I suppose one could say it was Hawaiian-themed.“
What’s your funniest wedding day memory?
“Our ceremony was at Makena Cove (also nicknamed “Secrets Beach”)—not such a secret since there were two other couples getting married at the same time as us. The funny part was when the officiant blew the conch shell—it was very loud and I think one of the other couples were in the midst of exchanging their vows. The conch shell blowing went on for several minutes (at least it seemed that long).”
What was your favorite wedding day moment?
“The first look!”
Describe your wedding day in 5 words or less:
“Calm, lovely, tropical, romantic, scenic.”
Where did you go on your honeymoon?
“Same spot! Maui. Combo wedding/honeymoons are the best—especially when it’s just the two of you.”
Any advice for future brides/grooms?
“Have the type of wedding that feels shamelessly good to both of you. Don’t let your family & friends influence your decision. If you want a big party, have a big party!! If you want to elope – elope! Be true to yourselves. It’s your day, enjoy it. You’ll be so glad you did.”
