Fun is an excellent theme and goal for a wedding day, as proven by Emily and her new husband, Mike. In the words of our sweet bride, it was “the best day ever!!” And, girls, it seriously was. There is so much free-spirited, happy energy going on in every picture that we wish we could turn back the clock and crash their wedding. For real. Just look at that capture of their sparkler send-off!
How did Mike propose?
“Mike proposed August 15, 2014 in Kauai – one of the Hawaiian Islands. It was our first time there and, since we had arrived late in the evening, we planned to lay low and just walk the beach and have dinner at our hotel. During our walk, Mike proposed and I immediately started simultaneously crying and laughing. Little did I know he had the hotel’s event coordinator secretly filming the whole thing, and had a private dinner set up on the beach!”
How did you choose your gown?
“I knew I wanted something strapless and low back, but didn’t know if I’d find that. I only went to two stores, and Brides by the Falls was the second one! I only had my mom with me, as I tend to get confused with too many opinions (so many feels!). Once I tried on the dress ‘Graceful’ by Astrid & Mercedes, I immediately fell in love; I knew this would become my dress. I told the sales lady I felt like Julia Roberts from Runaway Bride (minus the whole cold feet thing) when she tries on her dress and is swishing back and forth and Richard Gere is holding the newspaper upside down. Any dress that makes you feel like Julia Roberts is a keeper in my book. Every time I would go back for fittings, I just fell more and more in love, I didn’t want to take it off!“
Tell us about your day! Did you have a theme or style in mind?
“Our day was magical, but really, literally the best day EVER!! Everyone kept asking me ‘my colors’ and I kept telling them, “Neutral?” I never really had a theme (unless best day ever counts?) or color style, I just had a vision. I knew I wanted a more intimate reception, I wanted hydrangeas, and I wanted everyone to have the most fun night celebrating!
The most special moment was when Mike and I did our first look. We used my parents’ backyard (they have some amazing gardens) and all week it was calling for rain, but it turned out to be sunny and perfect. When I saw Mike, everything melted away, and I had that moment where I knew I was about to marry my best friend. The ceremony was so special and I felt so connected to Mike, then after some more pictures it was party time!”
What’s your funniest wedding day memory?
“At the end of the night, Mike’s friends lifted both of us up on chairs (see pictures) – SO fun! And then Mike sort of fell, haha, but it was all good!”
Five words that best describe your significant other:
Mike is: loving, genuine, smart, reliable, best friend (and handsome, but that’s six)
Emily is: beautiful, funny, smart, caring, kind, stubborn (haha, kidding, kind of)
Any advice for future brides/grooms?
“Have fun!! It’s so easy to get caught up in the minutiae of all the planning (and I’m sure I did at one point), but at the end of the day you are marrying your partner in crime for life so remember that and relish in every moment.”
Where did you go on your honeymoon?
“We went to Maui, sort of back to where it all started, Hawaii. Aloha!”
