Think wedding dresses can’t be stylish and practical? Think again. We’re talking about pockets. Hidden within the folds of your mikado, jacquard, satin, or dupioni skirt, they’re a stylish solution for the modern bride. They’re great for so many things. Lipstick to highlight your smile, your vows, or even your ID for the after-party. Pockets are also excellent twirl-enhancing and photo-op moment devices.
Which Wedding Dresses Have Pockets?
Pockets are most commonly found in bridal gowns with fuller skirts like A-lines and ball gowns. They also work best when those silhouettes are made of fabrics that have a bit of structure like mikado, jacquard, satin, and dupioni.
They’re less likely to be found in wedding dresses with gossamer overlays like organza, chiffon, tulle, and lace. The reason for this is that to insert a functional pocket, it would need to be attached to all the layers, including the sheer one. Doing so would then interfere with the fall and the movement of the topmost airy layer.
However, that doesn’t mean they don’t exist! Depending on the design and construction, a clever pocket can sometimes be tucked away without disrupting the flow.
So while you may not see them, once your hands find their way in, you’ll wonder how anyone ever goes without. (The answer, of course, is a cute purse!)
Why Pockets Are Everything
We like them in everything—pants, skirts, dresses. They’re so handy for things like phones, mints, or anything small you’d rather not hold in your hand for hours. They’re also one of those classic design elements that combine practicality with lasting appeal.
However, it’s true that not all designs can pull off a pocket. Sometimes due to style, sometimes because they aren’t a natural addition to the shape or textile. For instance, a slinky bias-cut or fit and flare gown is no place for pockets, which is just fine. Especially because a cute clutch or little beaded cross-body will do the trick.
