Sleek Wedding Dresses
Minimalist, simple, and fitted are all terms synonymous with sleek wedding dresses. Instead of thinking of the look as a straightforward silhouette like a ball gown, consider it a sensibility. The look is achieved through a leaner, relatively unembellished profile. So that can mean the fluid drape of a bias cut, an understated column, a gently arced fluted skirt.
We’ve gathered all our Lea-Ann Belter and Astrid & Mercedes gowns that embody the sleek style and will break down the elements that create this look.
What is a Sleek Wedding Gown?
“Sleek” isn’t an official wedding dress shape so much as a sensibility. These timeless wedding gowns share a common thread: they skim your figure and feel both modern and classic all at once. To achieve a balance of curve-hugging smolder and sophistication, textiles and careful design come into play.
Fabric
Fabric is everything in a sleek gown. Crepe and charmeuse are perennial favorites—crepe for its clean, matte drape, and charmeuse for its liquid, luminosity. That said, a sleek bridal gown can also be crafted with fabrics that have a little less give, such as lace, Mikado, and jacquard.
Cut
Many sleek gowns are cut on the bias, which a term describing fabric cut diagonally against the grain. By cutting the fabric in this way and combining with precisely engineered seams, a bias cut gown skims and clings in all the right places. Bias cutting requires real skill both in pattern making and execution, but the result is a gown that feels almost custom-made to your body.
Column gowns, while not cut on the bias, also achieve a vibe that’s quintessential sleek. They which fall straight from shoulder to hem with either no or a sight flare at the hem. Often, a column dress is crafted from fabrics such as Mikado (as in our Monica gown) together, the clean lines deliver an architectural and elegant impression.
Another minimalist design beloved by sleek gown seeking brides is the fluted skirt. Unlike a fit and flare gown, whose skirt flares out, a fluted dress’s hem is more understated, not unlike a champagne glass. Both styles have a body-con shape that shows you off in all the right places, but a fluted dress’s less-full bottom changes the visual proportion. The result is the look is more, well, sleek!
Though a traditional A-line dress does not leap to mind when we think ‘sleek wedding dress’ it does get an honorable mention here. As we’ve said before, a minimalist wedding dress is a state of mind. So, while many an A-line is certainly ball gown adjacent, there are those that fall at the sleek end of the spectrum.
