Changing up your wedding day look between the ceremony and reception is definitely a thing. It’s a fun way to express different sides of your bridal style—elegant and dramatic for your vows, chic and carefree for your reception. A separate party dress is one option, but that means taking off the gown you love. That might sound great in theory, but it may be the last thing you’ll want to do on your wedding day, especially if your dress is comfortable and makes you feel beautiful.
So, how do you get the best of both worlds without completely changing outfits? Enter timeless wedding gowns with detachable trains and overskirts like Electra below!
Detachable Trains vs. Overskirts: What's the Difference?
It’s hard to know what terms apply to what in bridal, and detachable trains and overskirts are no exception.
They are similar in that a removable overskirt or train effectively turns one wedding day look into two. However, they work a little differently:
- A detachable train attaches from the back and flows behind you. From the front, they’re not as visible, mostly affecting how your gown looks from behind.
- A detachable overskirt is a 360 degree transformation. For example, a column gown like Monica below can look like an A-line or even ball gown. To achieve this, an overskirt typically wraps around your waist, and often parts in front, although it sometimes goes all the way around!
Both options can be made from all kinds of fabrics — lace, Mikado, jacquard, or even something lighter like organza or net.
Types of Detachable Bridal Trains
Some trail from your shoulders, others from your waist. Either way, they’re great for creating one look for your ceremony and another for the reception.
Waist-attached detachable train
The train hooks, buttons, or snaps onto the back of your gown at the waist. It can range from a short sweep train to something longer and more dramatic. It can even take the form of trailing tails, as in our Melody gown below. When you remove it, your gown’s silhouette stays intact.
Watteau train
A Watteau train attaches at the upper back or shoulders and flows straight down from there. The effect is incredibly elegant and theatrical in a very good way! Our Hyde Park train is a beautiful example: crafted in structured ivory mikado, it creates a sweeping, sculptural silhouette from behind, and is stunning paired with a fit and flare wedding dress!
How Do Removable Wedding Dress Trains Attach?
Removable trains attach at your back waist via discreet anchor points such as buttons, snaps, or hooks. If your detachable train consists of long, full tails like those on Melody, the tails attach just under the belt on either side of the zipper.
Can I add a detachable train to a regular wedding dress?
A skilled seamstress can add attachment points to an existing gown, but it’s not always straightforward. If your dress isn’t constructed to support the weight of an added train, it can affect how everything drapes and fits. Let’s say you chose sleek wedding dress like Priya below. Cut from slinky charmeuse, her design does not include boning or stiff fabric, so getting a heavy train to sit beautifully is next to impossible. However, an airy removable train that falls from the shoulders works beautifully. Ask your bridal consultant for help in choosing a removable train that works with your gown!
If the two-look idea appeals to you, the easiest path is to look for gowns that are designed with detachable options. Alternately, you could choose a removable overskirt, which usually attaches via a belt around your waist.
